Helpful Information for Helping Teens Cope with National Tragedies

The recent act of violence in Las Vegas -- the largest mass shooting in US history -- can be unnerving for students, creating feelings of confusion, sadness and anxiety. As news reports of this frightening event unfold in the media, it is important that we all -- families, teachers and staff -- talk with students about their feelings and thoughts around this national tragedy and the many others in recent news. Below are links to tips from the National Education Association (http://neatoday.org/2017/10/02/mass-shooting-las-vegas-talk-students/) as originally offered by the National Association of School Psychologists and from the Orange County Department of Education (http://newsroom.ocde.us/five-things-to-keep-in-mind-when-helping-kids-cope-with-crisis/). Both offer helpful information and guidance for families. If you have any concerns about your student, please contact your school's health and wellness coordinators.

Congratulations to the terrific team of "Know it Alls," who won the coveted title of "Champions of the Battle of the Wits!"  The team, aptly named "Smarties" and lead by two-time champ, Mr. Martens, included Bhavna Singh, Julia Cordero, Marcos Ruiz, and Spencer Heikel.  The winning squad had some stiff competition from teams comprised of the Mayor of San Bruno, the San Bruno Fire Chief, San Bruno Police Officers (including our own Officer Rogge), Ms. Maund and her stellar students, and the tough competitors, Ms. de Brito-Guedes and her office staff. The event was coordinated and emceed by the ever-effervescent Mr. Olsen who showered the teams with tough, clever, and fun-fact questions.  Check out the "Smarties" cool trophy located in classroom A-204.  Congratulations, again, from Ms. Habeeb.
