## Course Descriptions

**ALGEBRA I
GRADE: 9 CREDITS: 10 COLLEGE RECOMMENDED? YES
PREREQUISITES: None**

The first-year Algebra course is intended to help students learn and develop solid mathematical thinking and demonstrate mastery of the California State Standards in Algebra. This foundation course prepares students for more advanced courses in mathematics. Some Algebra I course topics include the following: expressions, equations, functions, properties of Real numbers, solving linear equations, graphing linear equations and functions, writing linear equations, solving and graphing linear inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, exponents and exponential functions, polynomials, factoring, quadratic equations and functions, radicals, rational equations and expressions, probability, and data analysis. In an attempt to reach each child, a variety of instructional strategies and methodologies are employed, such as technology, group work, differentiated instruction, support programs, and more. A scientific calculator is required.

**ALGEBRA I (SHELTERED)****GRADE: 9-12 CREDITS: 10 COLLEGE RECOMMENDED? YES**PREREQUISITES: None

Coursework specially designed to assist students for whom English is not their primary language. This course is designed to give a foundation in basic algebraic principles. Students are prepared for advanced courses in mathematics. Major topics include symbol manipulation, graphing, problem solving, factoring, simplifying rational expressions, and solving quadratic equations. This course covers the same California State Standards that are covered in Algebra I.
