Capuchino High Athletes Take Pledge to Speak Up About Concussions

Earlier this month, Capuchino athletes participated in Team Up Day – a day to take a pledge to team up and speak up about concussions. The CDC estimates as many as 3.8 million concussions occur in the U.S. annually through sports and recreational activities, but only 5-10 percent are recognized and eventually diagnosed by coaches, parents, and athletic trainers. Surveys of high school athletes after the season find that 20 percent had concussion symptoms after a head impact at least once over the course of the last season, and more than 50 percent of the contact sport athletes report at least one event in their career. The SMUHSD has an excellent concussion protocol, but having students report suspected concussions in their teammates is also vital. Capuchino athletes recognize that in order to be the best team they can be, they have to look out for each other on and off the field, and this includes reporting concussions. Go Mustangs!

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE FREE AND REDUCED MEAL PROGRAMS

Many students who were eligible for the Free and Reduced Meal Program last year have not yet re- applied for the 2016-2017 school year. Those students eligibility will expire on September 23, 2016 and they will no longer be able to receive a free/reduced meal. We would like to encourage students/parents to apply as soon as possible to remain on the program.

The quickest method is to submit an application online at www ezmealapp.com. It takes approx. 5-10 minutes and is submitted directly to the district. Paper applications are still available at the Health Office.

There are many benefits to being on the free and reduced lunch program including waived or reduced testing fees for IB exams, SAT's, ACT's, AP Exams, etc. and a reduced cost samtrans bus pass.

If you have any questions, please see Ms. Luna at the Health Office.
